How is corporate culture shown?

In Forenom managers and directors count on the fact that with responsibilities comes freedom. And when you are free to do things your way, the results will be better than if you are told how things should be done.

Over the last weeks I have seen many posts in LinkedIn of office desks where a new laptop, phone and other company stuff is waiting for the new employee. At first the idea looks great – everything waiting for you at the first day. For me it tells that company has thought its recruitment process all the way through until the very end. Also it shows that your company is doing well, otherwise you wouldn’t have new laptops and phones. However, it doesn’t tell much about the real corporate culture the company has.

No phone, no pencils, just someone’s old laptop

I will tell you what happened when I got a job at Forenom as Area Manager. The recruitment process was short and fast because there was a need for an Area Manager to be found and hired as soon as possible. After the job interview I started after maybe one week. I went to our head office for a week to get to know the company. At that moment I didn’t have a company phone or a sweater and I had someone’s old computer. But one thing that I will remember is the conversation we had with the director who was in charge of operations in Finland. I asked him about the working times. He replied to me that it doesn’t matter if you were at the office, at home or at the summer cottage fishing, no one will come and ask you where you are and what you are doing (in the meaning of stalking). I was free to do my job whenever and however I wanted to do it.

I think that freedom to do things is much more important than having a new phone or a laptop, but freedom is much harder to show in pictures. In Forenom managers and directors count on the fact that with responsibilities comes freedom. And when you are free to do things your way, the results will be better than if you are told how things should be done. In the end it’s all about the results.

Of course support from other teams is always a phone call away and that is something to cherish – you are not alone, even if you are sitting by yourself in your own office or summer cottage on a boat fishing.

P.S. It didn’t take long for me to get the brand new laptop, phone, company credit card, sweaters, pencils and other stuff 🙂
